An Introduction to Rational Inattention

چکیده
• Another alternative – and this is the one that rational inattention chooses – is to model agents as having only a probability distribution over the true state of the world, instead of knowing the state of the world with certainty. For instance, imagine looking at a thermometer or yourwatch:While being – inmost cases, at least – highly correlated with the actual temperature or time, respectively, they probably do not tell you exactly the true value.

Business Cycle Dynamics under Rational Inattention∗
This paper studies a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model with rational inattention. Decisionmakers have limited attention and choose the optimal allocation of their attention. We study the implications of rational inattention for business cycle dynamics. For example, we study how rational inattention affects impulse responses of prices and quantities to monetary policy shocks, aggregat...
متن کاملDiscrete Choice and Rational Inattention: a General Equivalence Result
This paper establishes a general equivalence between discrete choice and rational inattention models. Matejka and McKay (2015, AER) showed that when information costs are modelled using the Shannon entropy function, the resulting choice probabilities in the rational inattention model take the multinomial logit form. By exploiting convex-analytic properties of the discrete choice model, we show ...
متن کاملTravel time variability and rational inattention
This paper sets up a rational inattention model for the choice of departure time for a traveler facing random travel time. The traveler chooses how much information to acquire about the travel time outcome before choosing departure time. This reduces the cost of travel time variability compared to models in which the information is exogenously fixed .
متن کاملMaking Sense of Ignoring Cents: Price Points and Price Rigidity under Rational Inattention
We explore the relationship between price points and price rigidity using two datasets. One is a large weekly transaction price data set, covering 29 product categories over an eight-year period from a large Midwestern United States supermarket chain. The other comes from the Internet and includes daily prices over a two-year period for a variety of consumer electronic products with a wide rang...
متن کاملStore Quality Image and the ‘rational Inattention Hypothesis’: an Empirical Study of the Drivers of $9 and 9¢ Price-endings among Internet-based Sellers
Prior research shows that 9¢, 99¢, $9 and $99 in retail prices occur far more than expected. We investigate the extent to which these “‘9’ price-endings” occur in Internet-based selling, and explore what drives the observed variations. In particular, we explore theories based on customer perceptions of store quality image and rational inattention to price-endings. To accomplish this, we specify...
